Joyeux Anniversaire (Between Birthdays and Christmas)

Evenin’ Goofies,

Today’s my birthday.

That sentence still feels a little strange to type, mostly because for a long time I didn’t love what it meant. Growing up with a birthday this close to Christmas had a way of blurring the edges of celebration. There were years when I’d hear, “This is your birthday and Christmas gift,” delivered with the best intentions and a carefully wrapped box. And I’d smile, because that’s what you do—but part of me always felt like my day got folded into the holiday and quietly set aside.

As a kid, that stung. It felt like I was asking for too much just by existing in December.

Funny how perspective sneaks up on you.

As an adult, I get it now. I really get it. December is expensive. It’s generous and warm and joyful, but it’s also tight budgets, stretched paychecks, and sometimes more month at the end of the money than anyone planned for. I’ve been there. I’ve lived those seasons where you’re doing mental math at the grocery store, where the idea of “one big gift” isn’t laziness or neglect—it’s love doing the best it can with what it has.

And honestly? That realization softened something in me.

These days, my birthday doesn’t feel like it needs to be a production. It doesn’t need fireworks or extra candles. It feels like a quiet checkpoint. A pause. A moment to look around and realize I’m still here, still building, still telling stories that somehow found their way into other people’s lives.

That’s where you come in.

Whether you’re reading this on my site, following along with Secret Chords, supporting me on Patreon, or just quietly rooting for me from the sidelines—thank you. Truly. You’ve turned what used to be a complicated time of year into something warm and grounding. You’ve reminded me that being seen doesn’t always come wrapped in ribbon. Sometimes it comes as a comment, a read, a message, or simply showing up.

So today, instead of wishing for more, I’m grateful for what already exists.

For stories in progress.

For readers who care.

For growth that isn’t always loud but is always real.

If you’re celebrating something today, big or small, I hope you let yourself enjoy it without guilt. And if you’re stretching your resources, your energy, or your heart this season, know that you’re not alone.

Thanks for being here with me.
